Online screener vs. phone validation
Both have a role. They don't replace each other — they complement each other.
The online screener is efficient at scale and easy to compare. It performs a coarse pre-selection. But it depends on self-report — and self-report is notoriously unreliable when incentives are involved.
A phone call doesn't check whether someone can tick the right box. It checks whether the story behind the box is plausible.
Combination as the standard
In practice we recommend combining both: screener for pre-selection, phone check for fit, motivation, and articulation. Online screeners rely on self-report: answers can only be questioned to a limited extent, and articulation or motivation often remain invisible. An additional personal check makes it possible to follow up, clarify contradictions and judge suitability on a firmer basis — how much it adds depends on the target group and the criteria.
How the two work together
The question is not ‘online or phone?’ but: which instrument checks what best?
- Online screener: efficient for hard, structured criteria (age, region, household, usage frequency) and for initial pre-selection.
- Manual review: spots patterns and contradictions no automatic rule captures.
- Phone call: checks depth, consistency, motivation and articulacy – what a form cannot show.
Illustrative example
Illustrative example (not a client case): interviews on private pension planning need people who ‘actively made an investment decision in the last twelve months’. Online, that is easy to tick. On the phone we ask what the decision was, how the person informed themselves and who else was involved. Only then does it become clear whether it was their own decision or one made by their bank adviser.
What makes a good phone call
- It repeats key criteria in different wording.
- It asks about concrete situations rather than attitudes.
- It clarifies technology, appointment and logistics – without anticipating study content.
- It ends with a clear decision and a firm confirmation or a friendly decline.
